Private memory assessment in Edinburgh: what to expect

Quick answer
A private memory assessment looks in detail at memory and thinking and the factors that may affect them, without waiting for a National Health Service (NHS) referral. At CogMission in Edinburgh, our Cognoscopy combines a computerised cognitive test, comprehensive blood panels and a 90-minute consultation, leading to a personalised plan. It complements, and doesn’t replace, NHS care.
NHS memory services do important work, but waits can be long and the focus is mainly on whether dementia is present. Some people want answers sooner, or want to understand what may be affecting their memory even if they’ve been told “everything looks fine”.
NHS or private: how they differ
On the NHS, your GP (family doctor) does initial checks and refers you to a memory assessment service, which confirms whether you have dementia and, if so, what type. That pathway is the right route for a formal dementia diagnosis, and everyone diagnosed in Scotland is entitled to at least a year of post-diagnostic support.
A private assessment can be useful if you:
- Have noticed changes and want to look into them sooner
- Have had normal GP results but still feel something isn’t right
- Have a family history of dementia and want to understand your own risk factors
- Want a detailed baseline to track changes over time
What our Cognoscopy includes
- Computerised cognitive assessment of memory and thinking, giving a baseline to track progress
- Comprehensive blood panels that go well beyond routine GP bloods, looking at areas such as inflammation, hormones, nutrition, blood sugar, vascular health and genetics
- A 90-minute consultation covering your health, lifestyle and family history. Family members are welcome
- Results and a personalised plan, explained clearly and prioritised
Blood tests can be done at our clinic at 4 Albyn Place, Edinburgh, or with a visiting phlebotomist anywhere in the UK, and consultations can take place by video call. You don’t need a GP referral, and with your permission we can share findings with your GP.
How much does it cost?
The Standard Cognoscopy is £3,650 and the Advanced Cognoscopy, which adds four further in-depth tests, is £5,350. Prices include testing and all associated services. See packages and prices.
Questions to ask any private clinic
- Who carries out the assessment, and what are their qualifications?
- What tests are included, and what does each one look for?
- Will I get a written plan, and what support is there afterwards?
- How will the results be shared with my GP?
- Does the assessment diagnose dementia, or look at risk factors and causes?
The best first step is a conversation. Our free 20-minute call is a chance to talk through your concerns and decide together whether an assessment is right for you.
